A Celtic Journey

The Burren Region

Nothing could adequately describe the resplendent rock garden that is the Burren, with its abundance of exotic flora, bird and wildlife. Dotted with megalithic stone tombs, some representing the regions earliest monuments (from about 3,800 BC) including Poulnabrone Dolman. There is an abundance of Christian and pre-christian monuments, along with medieval settlements - castles, ring (fairy) forts, wishing wells and ancient churches spanning the centuries of time.

Experience the Irish welcome: "Cead Mile Failte" (A Hundred Thousand Welcomes!) and small village life as we travel the winding roads of the West.

Day One: Your Adventure Begins!
Start point is the colourful harbour front village of Kinvara, located on the shores of Galway Bay. A CycleWest Representative will meet you for your tour briefing and equipment handout.

Day Two: Plateaus and Moonscapes
An early morning start brings you to the beginning of our unique trail - the Green Road from Kinvara, offering spectacular views over Galway Bay. Green Roads are thousands of years old, used by farmers over the centuries to drive cattle up and down the mountainsides. This day is designed a leisurely day to bring you into the heart of the Burren, explore Ailwee Caves, and visit Poulnabrone Dolman, a 4,500 year old dolman. Walk through Caherconnell Ring Fort. Onward to the environmental initiative of The Burren - the Burren Interpretative Centre in Kilfenora. Discover a world of wildlife, folklore, ancient archaeology and wonderful plant life. Explore Kilfenora Cathedral and Celtic High Crosses. Descend the winding Corkscrew Hill into Ballyvaughan.

Day Three: Landscape and History
Today's itinerary includes a tour of restored Newtown Castle and guided hill walk for those of you who wish to explore the surrounds on foot.  We continue en route to the matchmaking town of Lisdoonvarna, famous for its spa wells and the Burren Smokehouse. the towering 700 ft. high Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher stretch for 8km & rise up to 214 metres above the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of County Clare. O'Brien's Tower stands proudly on a headland of the majestic Cliffs. From the Cliffs one can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, as well as The Twelve Pins, the Maum Turk Mountains in Connemara and Loop Head to the South.

Day Three (alternate): Lunar Landscapes
Today's biking is a leisurely ride along one of the most scenic coastal routes. The flaggy shoreline, Fanore Beach and Blackhead Lighthouse are amongst just some of the points of interest you view along the route today. The village of Doolin is a Mecca for traditional
music, designer crafts and Irish seafood.  Evening of traditional Irish music where the less fainthearted can join in and sing or dance should you so desire!

Day Four: Step Back in Time
Early morning ferry ride to the Aran Islands from Doolin to the Island of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. Witness the tranquility, the whitewashed cottages and the intricate network of stone walls built by generations of island inhabitants. The island offers several ancient sites to visit, including the hilltop fort, Dun Aengus, one of Europe's oldest forts. Overnight on the Aran Islands.

Day Five: City of the Tribes
this morning we continue our explorations of the historical Aran Islands.
The Irish speaking Aran Islands are renowned for their unique way of life
where age old traditions co-exist comfortably with modern living. The islands have a rich history which can be seen from their ancient monuments, from both prehistoric and Christian times. From the Aran Islands we transverse the beautiful Galway Bay and arrive into the harbour of Galway city. We spend the late afternoon
exploring this landmark coastal city. Overnight Galway City.

Day Six: Farewell!
Sadly we must bid you farewell today! Rail & coach connections to Shannon & Dublin. Please allow one more day for flight travel. Private Transfers available upon request.
