The Corrib River
sweeps mightily past, rolling to the Atlantic, cheered on by the wails of seagulls
overhead. A familiar sound in Galway City – as familiar as the sight of a hundred
swans nestled at the entrance to the Claddagh Quay.
What a perfect place to begin your Ireland bike trip - the West. From here we
steer toward Connemara, famous for its untamed, wild beauty. As we leave the city and
greet the open loveliness of the landscape, the Twelve Bens rise to meet us, their
quartzite peaks glistening in the midday sun. We continue toward Clifden, drinking
in the surroundings, mindful that we are spinning through one of the most magnificent
stretches in all of Europe.
A short detour takes us past the gated entrance to the Ballynahinch Castel estate. Fishing
rods and Wellington boots are the uniform of the day, as guests and their ghillies head to
the river beat. We continue to Roundstone village where the Galway Hooker boats set their
red sails, billowing on the harbor’s horizon. An intoxicating sight, surpassed only
by the extraordinary, white sandy beaches at Dogs Head and Gurteen Bay.
We linger a few moments, inhaling the view. In the foreground, lobster fishermen unfurl
their pots and ropes while in the background, the mountains regale us, once again, with
all their beauty.
