CycleWest Ireland Environmental Policy

OUR VALUES: TRAVELING  LIGHT, TRAVELING GREEN IN IRELAND

For our guests, improving the environment has never been more fun. For example, by eating delicious selection of  menus prepared with locally sourced produce, guests are supporting local and organic growers. They also contribute to green travel when by simply joining a tour and riding their bikes through some of the finest natural treasures in the West of Ireland. Our guests are supporting the many efforts made by CycleWest Ireland to enhance and protect these areas.

At CycleWest Ireland we are passionate about offering a green travel experience in Ireland and about  the landscape, the culture, our arts and our history. It is only natural therefore that we try to minimize impact upon the environment and endeavor to maximize the economic benefits that tourism can bring to our local communities in some of the more remote areas that we visit.

Our bike trips take our guests through local peatlands and rare limestone regions, and we do so responsibly and with minimal impact. We are committed to continually improving our Responsible Tourism policy. We participate in the Ireland ‘Leave no Trace’ an Irish Outdoor Ethics Education Program designed to promote and inspire responsible outdoor recreation through education, research, and partnerships.

  • Conserving natural resources from office to destination by establishing energy and recycling policies

  • Informing our clients about Sustainable Tourism and, where appropriate,
    encouraging them to take part
Benefiting local communities by working with local partners and suppliers
Respecting local cultures, traditions and local heritage
Publicizing good practice to encouraging Sustainable Tourism

  • We provide our guests with advance planning information that includes details of the bike route, travel planning that includes information about bus and rail routes to enhance the slow travel experience.

  • We use local tourism businesses, including hotels and attractions, that endeavor to reduce carbon emissions and  generate a certain level of their own energy or buy into local supplies of greener energy. We encourage our travelers to look at ways of reducing energy and water also.

  • On all of our tours, we use only marked paths and roads rather than off-roading.

  • We encourage and include visits to heritage areas and areas of natural conservation thereby helping to financially support its management or maintenance, through an entrance fees and donations.

  • We have a policy whereby all litter and waste generated on our guided trips are brought back to the resort and recycled if possible. We encourage the same on our self led trips.

  • Guests are provided with information on the flora and fauna that they are likely to see on their trip with us, thereby enhancing their enjoyment and appreciation for the environment.

  • Active participation in the Leave no Trace Policy is encouraged. At the heart of Leave No Trace are seven principles for reducing the damage caused by outdoor activities. These are:

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Be Considerate of Others
Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife
Travel and Camp on Durable Ground
Leave What You Find
Dispose of Waste Properly
Minimize the Effects of Fire

  • We are currently striving to achieve our Ecotourism Certification through achieving a series of best practice Ecotourism standards and training. Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people" - The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) http://www.ecotourism.org
