Known as Italy's 'Green Heart', Umbria is a land apart, with rolling hills
and fertile plains, studded with picturesque towns, castles and monasteries. Bike with us
through this pristine loveliness. The color green dominates the scenery here,
creating a patchwork of mystique and evocative vistas.
Day
1 - Arrival in Montefalco
Your
tour begins in Montefalco, 'the Balcony of Umbria'. An Etruscan town,
Montefalco will be your tour base for the duration of this trip. We will be on quiet roads, rolling past
vineyards and olive groves with a visit to the town of Bevagna. A charming ancient town located in valley, there
will be time to explore the historic center and shops before returning to Montefalco for
dinner.
Day 2 - Montefalco
to Spoleto
Leaving Montefalco we descend to the valley and weave our way along the valley floor on
our way to Spoleto. After lunch in Spoleto
there is time to walk the hill town and explore the many highlights of a town rich in
history and art.
Day 3 - Montefalco
to Assisi
Meandering through the valley we pass agricultural farming while surrounded on either side
with the mountains and ancient hill towns. The
cycle into Assisi does require some uphill but affords wonderful views along the way. The influence of St. Francis is there in all parts
of the town and the Basilica of St. Francis is just one of the many highlights!
Day 4 - Montefalco
to Deruta
Cycling along the valley floor makes for a gentle morning of riding on our way to Deruta. Our arrival in Deruta will begin with a tour of the
process of making the ancient and traditional Italian pottery known as majolica and local
markets.
Day 5 - Rest and Relaxation
Typically this is a rest day for many which allows one to explore Montefalco and the many
shops, engage in the local wine tasting or a cooking class, visit the Antico Frantoio
Brizi (ancient olive oil mill). But, there
will be a cycle route planned for those wanting to ride.
Day 6 - Montefalco
to Todi
On this morning we say arrivederci to our friends at the Brizi B&B. The ride to Todi takes us through some quaint
villages, rolling terrain, and many views of vineyards and olive groves. Explore the town and find a hidden trattoria along the
ancient passageways.
Day 7 - Todi
to Orvieto
This cycle route takes us down to the valley floor from Todi and then a bit of climb to a
plateau then a beautiful long descent to Orvieto. This
splendid medieval city is dominated by one of the regions finest cathedrals. Although the tour officially ends mid day in
Orvieto, arrangements can be made for overnight accommodations or transport via train to
Roma Central station or Fiumicino Airport. |
