Our Umbria Green Heart Bike Tour is a journey that takes you through the ‘Green Heart of Italy’, on this wonderful self led bike tour. Travel at your own pace through medieval villages, olive groves and vineyards.

Torgiano ~ Montefalco ~ Orvieto

This Luxury, self guided bike tour is a wonderful mix of vineyards, olive groves and tiny medieval villages perched upon the hillside. Umbria ia a stunningly beautiful region waiting to be discovered. Bike through rolling hills dotted with castles, fortresses and watchtowers and visit the well-preserved medieval hill towns harboring splendid Renaissance art and Assisi, where the region’s rich history can be found at every turn.   Visit Torgiano where you will spend a night in the former home of a noble count, now a 5-star hotel and part of the Lungarotti Winery estate.  Two days in Montefalco: wander through vineyards of sagrantino grapes and taste the outstanding Umbrian wines.

Day 1: Citta della Pieve
Our tour meeting point is thecharming Realis Castelluccio in the hill town of Città della Pieve. After a tour introduction abnd bike fit out, you can explore this delightful town high up on a hillwith its  intense terracotta colouring. At the highest point the fortress dominates with its five square towers, while the town centre is Piazza del Plebiscito

Day 2: Torgiano & Lungarotti cellars
Set out to explore Deruta and Torgiano. Your first day winds past cornflower fields and isolated farmhouses, then into a series of gently rolling hills studded with minuscule towns that you’ll want to stop and visit. Not-to-be-missed stop is the pottery town of Deruta. Your destination is Torgiano, a short walk from the hotel is the wonderful Museum of Wine: a story of 5,000 years of winemaking and has few rivals in the world in terms of number and quality of works on display.  Distance: 55km/ 34miles 

Day 3: Montefalco & Sagrantino wine
Exquisite downhill bike ride into the broad upper Tiber Valley, followed by a short climb up to Assisi, the remowned hometown of Saint Francis. Continue and visit Spello, Bevagna and finally arrive to Montefalco, one of Umbria’s lovliest towns occupying a hilltop placed so strategically that majestic views are available at the end of every street. This is a territory that is rich in history, art and traditions. Easy to reach and difficult to leave behind!  Distance 60 km/37.5 miles. 

Day 4: Spoleto
Along the way, on today’s bike trip, you breeze past a few isolated rural churches and a series of small towns. Very gentle hills and level terrain. Today’s highlight is the visit to Spoleto, enhanced by striking hilltop location and its superb monuments. One of the most important towns in Umbria, Spoleto is located at the foot of Monteluco and enjoys an international reputation due to the very successful  Festival di Spoleto, one of Europe’s leading arts festivals. Distance: 52km/ 32.5 miles 

Day 5: Todi on back road
Bike tour on back roads as you wend your way over hill and dale, past the tail end of mountain streams, silent forests and wild mushroom stands through Giano dell’Umbria, Viepri and Castagnola to reach Todi which still has almost all of its medieval walls, and its pristine charm has made it a favourite home of wealthy romans and artists. Distance 40km/25miles

Day 6: Orvieto
Another glorious day on your bike tour. Today is a more challenging day with  some pretty steep inclines via Prodo Castle to reach Orvieto, looming ahead on its strange volcanic plateau, crowned by the cathedral of Santa Maria, considered by one and all to be among the very finest churches in all of Europe. Distance 46 km / 28.7 miles

Day 7: Civita di Bagnoreggio
Optional bike tour to this ghost townlocated in a striking position atop a plateau of friable volcanic rock overlooking the Tiber valley. Distance 44 km/27,5 miles. Time to bid you farewell: Arrivederci.
