Jataí The Beara Peninsula is rich in sites of historical and archaeological interest from wedge tombs, stone circles, and several ogham stones can also be seen throughout the peninsula.

Beara Peninsula

West Cork’s Beara peninsula is possibly one of the most scenic peninsula’s in Ireland. The rugged road that follows the coast along the Beara peninsula  is one of the most scenic in Ireland. The Beara Peninsula is quite remote and has remained perhaps the most unspoilt part of the south west region of Ireland, and like the peninsulas to the north, is a magical world of mountains and lakes surrounded by a picturesque coastlinet.  The Beara peninsula is possibly the least travelled but the most beautiful of the Kerry and Cork peninsulas.

It is a wild landscape with magnificently rugged mountain and seacoast scenery marked with rich evidence of a prehistoric past in the form of standing stones and burial monuments. There are also many fine villages, such as Allihies and Eyries, along the route. The largest town is Castletownbere, a major fishing port located on one of the deepest natural harbours in Ireland.

At the head of Bantry Bay is the village of Glengarriff, from where you can take a short boat trip to Garinish Island, famous for its Italianate Gardens with their sub-tropical flora. At the tip of the peninsula is Dursey Island, now home to only five souls, and connected to the mainland by Ireland’s only cable car.

Terrain consists of mainly quiet tarmac roads, bog roads, cliff and woodland paths and open moorland.  Spectacular views of Bantry Bay and south toward Sheepshead peninsula. The combination of rugged landscapes, natural beauty and varied history maked the Beara peninsuala a special destination.
