The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring representing love, loyalty, and friendship (the hands represent friendship, the heart: love, and the crown: loyalty). The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, now part of Galway City. The ring, as currently known, was first produced in the 17th century.
Considered the real cultural capital of Ireland, on a summer weekend in Galway City you will find brightly painted pubs heaving with live music, cafes offering front-row seats for observing street performers, festivals galore and serene river walks.
Steeped in history, the city nonetheless has a contemporary vibe. The Spanish Arch holds fort over the salmon-filled River Corrib. Remnants of the medieval town walls lie between shops selling Aran sweaters, handcrafted Claddagh rings, artisan food products and colourful bookstores.
Wander Galway City’s cobble-stoned streets and feel yourself stepping back in time to Medieval Ireland. Known the world over for its friendly people, charming streets, shopping and nightlife, Galway will refresh flagging spirits like no other place. The City of the Tribes will enthrall, delight and surprise you!
